Change the filter EVERY TIME you change the oil. The oil flow is restricted by the crud the filter removes so you are cutting the volume and pressure of the oil trying to lubricate the top end of the engine. You can have the best oil in the world but it doesn't do shit if it can't get through the filter. Five or six $2.00 filters (J.C. Whitney price) a year is nothing compared to an engine rebuild. $10 in filters this year or $750 in repair bills next. You decide.
